Why Spain? Why now?
Spain’s economy is looking bright again, and the country is set to be a leader in Europe as it revamps its clean energy transition as part of major reforms of its electricity sector.
Having established a new government in wholehearted support of renewable energy, and a brand new Ministry for the Ecological Transition, Spain is set to finally remove the shackles previously curbing its wind and solar acceleration. Minister Teresa Ribera is promising a ‘more plural and decentralised’ energy system.
The infamous ‘sun tax’ is being abolished, which previously crippled advances to distributed solar. Spain is also now planning to promote DG at a community and residential level; as well as removing regulatory barriers; they are now looking to resume feed-in-tariffs alongside further incentives.
Minister Ribera promises that the rise of PPAs will be an ‘essential instrument’ for the clean energy transition; the time is ripe for Spain’s big industry- from tourism, to agriculture, to manufacturing- to go renewable through bilateral contracts.
With the regulatory barriers and shaky reputation of the previous administration now shrugged off, Spain is now looking to restore investor confidence. With €100 billion of investment in renewable energy, the European Union’s target of 32% renewables by 2030 is in sight for Spain. The national government is now moving the implement European targets on a national legislative level.
It’s a new dawn for Spain, which is blessed with abundant solar and wind resources. In the first half of 2018, 22.6% of Spain was powered by wind, developing the country’s reputation as the fourth largest global wind energy producer with 23GW of wind already installed. Indeed, in the last 10 years, installed wind in Spain has increased by a whopping 53%.
2019 is a big year for Spain, as construction begins following the renewable energy auctions of 2018. Are you ready?
